-Milwaukee Hurricanes submitted story
The Milwaukee Hurricanes sealed a victory against a tough Southern Lakes Blue Devils team late in the 4th quarter, thanks to a historic drive lead by Hurricane QB Shannon King and tailback Wayne James.
The Blue Devils started the game receiving the ball only to fumble on their first play from scrimmage. Three plays later, the Hurricanes coughed the ball back up to the hungry Blue Devils defense.
With 4:26 left in the 1st quarter, Hurricane cornerback Adaris Anderson intercepted a Calhoun pass and ran it back for the first Hurricane score of the regular season. They failed to score on the two-point conversion, giving the Hurricanes 6-0 lead.
The Hurricanes started the 2nd quarter off strong. On their first drive of the quarter, they scored on a 26 yard touchdown pass from Shannon King to WR Trammel Robinson. The two-point conversion was again unsuccessful, resulting in 12-0 Milwaukee lead.
The Blue Devils responded immediately and returned the following kickoff for a touchdown (Hurricanes 12-8). The big play excitement continued, as Hurricanes playmaker Rodney Springs took the Blue Devils kickoff all the way for a Hurricane touchdown (Hurricanes 18-8), notching back-to-back kick return TDs.
The Blue Devils came back with vengeance and took the following drive down to the 30 yard line and hit a 40 yard field goal to point the Blue Devils within a score at 18-11, Hurricanes lead.
On the following drive the Blue Devils defense proved stiff and held the Hurricanes deep in their own territory for the punt. Punter Andrew Jacobsen was unable to handle the snap and the Blue Devils received a safety, cutting the Hurricanes lead to 18-13.
On the ensuing drive, Calhoun of the Blue Devils notched a late 2nd quarter 11 yard touchdown run to put Blue Devils ahead 19-18.
The third quarter was a standstill with both defenses producing back-and-forth change of possessions. With roughly 2 minutes left in the third quarter the rain started to come, which served as an omen for the upcoming Hurricane comeback.
A few change of possessions started the 4th quarter, until the Blue Devils hit another 31 yard field goal, increasing the lead to 22-18.
With 4 minutes left and the rain pouring down, Hurricanes QB Shannon King led his offense, with his run game, marching 80 yards down the field. The drive was capped off the drive with a Wayne James scamper of 17 yards for the game winning touchdown, putting the Hurricanes ahead 24-22 with 2 minutes left in regulation.
The Blue Devils ensuing offensive possession was met with stiff resistance by a motivated Hurricane defense. After a 3-and-out by the Blue Devils the Hurricanes took a knee to seal the game, clinching a Hurricanes victory 24-22.
